fMRI
What is fMRI?
Functional MRI is an imaging technique which assesses brain function and physiology as opposed to merely anatomical information. The MRI scanner rapidly acquires images of the brain during periods of activity or stimulus and at rest.
The patient will be asked to perform tasks such as finger tapping, moving their lips or feet or they may be asked to perform language tasks such as picture naming, reading and verb recognition. The “activity” images are subtracted from the “rest” images to demonstrate functional brain activity as a result of increased blood flow to the activated part of the brain cortex. The main clinical indication for performing fMRI is preoperative mapping of the brain cortex near a tumor or arteriovenous malformation .
