Ultrasound
What is Ultrasound?
Ultrasound is a safe, painless method used for examining the internal
structures of the body. High frequency sound waves are generated
and the echoes that result from their bouncing off the soft tissue
structures can be used to measure size and detect structural abnormalities.
Usually a lubricating gel is used to help conduct the sound waves
into the body. The person performing the examination will apply
the gel to your skin, and then a probe will be moved over its surface.
An Ultrasound examination usually takes between 15 minutes and one
hour to complete. Blood vessels and the heart are ideal structures
to be assessed using ultrasound as measurements of blood flow, vessel
structure and movement of muscle walls can be visualised.
